Welcome to the 2010 Southeast Regional SPE Conference website!

Florida State University is proud to be hosting the 2010 SPE Southeast Regional Conference. With over a year of planning, we are excited about the opportunities this conference has to offer. We think it has a bit of something for everyone, and we look forward to expanding our thoughts about the contemporary photography world.

The conference will be held October 21-24, 2010, at the Aloft Hotel in Tallahassee, Florida. The conference hotel is in downtown Tallahassee, near the campus of Florida State University, the Railroad Square gallery district, as well as many eating establishments and night clubs.

FEATURED SPEAKERS: AMY STEIN AND MATTHEW COOLIDGE
HONORED EDUCATOR: JOHN SCARLATA (In Memorium)

Amy Stein is a fine art photographer based in New York City. Her work explores our evolving isolation from community, culture and the environment. She has been exhibited nationally and internationally and her work is featured in many private and public collections such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Nevada Museum of Art, SMoCA and the West Collection. Her work is represented by Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco, ClampArt in New York, and Pool Gallery in Berlin.

Amy was raised in Washington, DC, and Karachi, Pakistan. She holds an MFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Matthew Coolidge is the Founder and Director of the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI) in Los Angeles, a non-profit art/research organization that employs a multimedia and multidisciplinary approach to increase and diffuse knowledge about how the nation’s lands are apportioned, utilized and perceived. He serves as a project director, photographer and curator for CLUI exhibitions, and has written several books published by the CLUI, including Back to the Bay: An Examination of the Shoreline of the San Francisco Bay Region (2001), and The Nevada Test Site: A Guide to America’s Nuclear Proving Ground (1996).

He lectures widely in the United States and Europe on contemporary landscape matters, and is a faculty member in the Curatorial Practice Program at the California College of the Arts, where he teaches a class about “nowhere”. Coolidge received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 2004.

John Scarlata was a professor and coordinator of the technical photography program in Appalachian State University’s Department of Technology. Scarlata studied photography at the Brooks Institute of Photography and the California Institute of the Arts, where he earned an MFA in 1976. He held teaching posts at UNC-Charlotte, the Penland School of Crafts and Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va. He joined the faculty at Appalachian in 1999.
Scarlata’s photographic work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including shows in Cuba and China. His work made use of large format cameras and a variety of printing methods, from 19th century antiquarian processes to digital output.

The Southeast SPE Conference welcomes proposals from all photographers, writers, educators, curators, historians and professionals from other fields. Topics are not required to be theme-based, and may include but are not limited to, imagemaking, history, contemporary theory and criticism, multidisciplinary approaches, new technologies, effects of media and culture, educational issues, funding, and presentations of work in photography, film, video, performance and installation.

The postmark deadline has passed: PRESENTER NOTIFICATIONS WERE MAILED AUGUST 12th.

Take a right (going east) out of the airport parking lot onto Capitol Circle.
Go 1.7 miles and turn left onto Springhill Road (North).
Continue along Springhill as it turns into Lake Bradford Road.
Turn right on Gaines Street (the stadium is at this intersection).
Go approx. 1 mile and turn left (north) on Monroe.
Proceed for approx. 1/5 mile and turn left on Call Street.
Make a quick right into the parking lot at the second driveway after the hotel.

At this year's conference, instead of individual reviews, we want to have the opportunity to see a wide range of work. To do so, there will be an open portfolio session for all to participate in on Saturday morning. Come, bring your work, and get your images seen by many!

Oct 1-23, 2010 621 Gallery, Tallahassee, Florida

Geared to show the best photographic work from the region, we encourage submissions of both traditional and non-traditional photographic work from all members of SPESE (students, faculty, etc) to this year's regional juried exhibition. Held during the month of October, this exhibition will be held at 621 Gallery and contemporary non-profit artspace in Tallahassee.

There will be a large reception for this exhibition during the conference.

Juror: Robert Fichter

Beginning in the 1960's, Robert Fichter was at the forefront of experimental photography; combining drawing, painting, and printmaking processes into his photographic practice. Having worked as a curator at the George Eastman House, and taught at both UCLA and Florida State University, Robert's work has been exhibited and published extensively and has received two NEA grants.
